Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy

First:

  • Eat frequent, small meals instead of a few large meals each day. Stay hydrated with clear liquid (Water, Pedialyte, Gatorade). Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, or coke. Try bananas, rice, apple sauce, plain toast and saltine crackers.

  • Ginger- teas, lozenges and tablets; Ginger Ale has a lot of sugar, which can worsen nausea.

  • Acupressure wristbands for nausea.

  • Over the counter: vitamin B6 10-25 mg taken 3-4 times a day with doxylamine (Unisom) 25mg- 50mg at night.

    Second:

  • A prescription for anti-nausea medication may be needed. Please call our office or discuss at your next appointment.

Third:

  • If you are still vomiting more than once per day after trying the above tips, please notify our office.

  • If you are unable to keep liquids down for > 24 hours or if you have a decrease in urination, you should go to the OB Emergency Room at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children (2nd floor).
